Why taking ownership of your circumstances is the first step toward creating the life you want.
This week’s quote is from nationally published editorial cartoonist, columnist, and humorist Frank Tyger, who simply stated, “Your future depends on many things, but mostly yourself.”
How many times do we blame outside forces for our circumstances? I know I’ve done it. Throughout my life, I’ve looked for excuses as to why I didn’t have the life I wanted. Why I didn’t have more money, more time, less stress, more freedom? Why wasn’t I in better shape?
You know, we live in a world where everyone seems to be the victim. No one wants to take responsibility for their own situation. Have you ever listened to someone complain about something and then say, “But really, it’s all my fault”?
Me neither.
It’s the economy, the president, my boss, my family, but it ain’t me. Well, let me break it to you. It’s you. Your situation in life is your own doing. And the sooner you realize it, the better off you’ll be.
Your life depends on many things, but mostly yourself. You have zero ability to change the past, but almost total control over your future. Now I’m not suggesting that outside forces have no impact on you or your life, but how you respond to them and what you choose to do moving forward is 100% under your control.
If things are not going well for you right now, I’ll bet you can look back and identify where your choices (or lack of) led you down your current path. Most results are a culmination of choices and actions. Yours are the reason you are where you are, and the decisions you make starting now will determine where you end up tomorrow, next month, next year, etc.
So what’s it gonna be? Are you going to keep blaming everything and everyone for where you are in life, or are you going to take responsibility and make some changes? Are you going to keep doing the same things over and over and expecting a different result?
I’ve heard it said that the only constant in life is change. Are you ready to make a change?
You will not have a better future if you continue down the same road. So change course. Stop playing the blame game and take a good long look in the mirror. That person staring back at you is the only one who can make your life better. That person can also be your biggest critic or your biggest cheerleader. Again, it’s up to you.
Once you realize that your future is up to you, then it’s time to decide what you really want and make a plan to go get it. Excuses are nothing more than speed bumps on the road to success. Here’s hoping you’ll choose to eliminate those speed bumps and have a much smoother ride.

Remember, it’s up to you to make an impact, and it’s up to you to lead a full life.
