Unlocking Success: Insights from The Strangest Secret

Posted on July 6, 2026 by Rob Clifton

Way back in 1956, a 35-minute audio recording was released entitled “The Strangest Secret” by Earl Nightingale.  Now, 70 years later, the concepts are still relevant, even in today’s world.

Nightingale defines success as the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.  I really like this definition, because it takes into account that success means something different to each of us. So whatever you consider to be a worthy pursuit, if you are making progress towards it, you are becoming successful.

In the recording, he lays out a 30-day plan with specific steps to help you attain any goal.

Your mission during these 30 days is to think about and work towards something meaningful to you.  As the author points out, whatever you plant in your mind and nurture, you will reap.

In other words, we become what we think about.  Sound familiar? That’s because nearly 20 years earlier, Napoleon Hill released “Think and Grow Rich” which I discussed recently. A popular documentary, “The Secret” was released in 2006, exactly 50 years after Nightingale’s recording, and went on to become one of the most successful personal development concepts of all time, fueling a best-selling book and self-help empire.

What do these three have in common? The Law of Attraction, or the idea that what we put out into the Universe is what we attract into our lives.

As Nightingale sees it, if you think in negative terms, you’ll end up with negative results.  But if you think in positive terms, you’ll get positive results.  As Henry Ford so aptly put it, “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.”

If you have a concrete and worthy goal, or mission in your life, you will steer your daily actions and decisions towards achieving it.  If you don’t, the author believes you will be like a ship without a crew, wandering the seas with no direction at all.

If you’ve never heard the recording, you can find it on YouTube. I seem to pick out something new every time I listen to it.

For those of you that have listened to it, I’d like to know if it has made an impact on you and how you live your life?  Did it inspire or motivate you?   If so, share your thoughts in the comments section.

If you would rather read the book, I strongly suggest you pick up a copy by following the link below.  It’s short enough to finish in one sitting, but it is packed full of useful information.  I believe it is a great book to start you on your journey of making a positive transformation in your life.  Once you finish it, let us know what you think.  I want to know how you plan to put the ideas into action.

Remember, ideas are worthless unless we act on them.
