If It’s Lonely at the Top, You’re Doing It Wrong

Posted on September 21, 2026 by Rob Clifton

“If you help someone up a mountain, you’re closer to the top yourself.”

The exact source of this quote is unclear, even though a similar version has been attributed to General Norman Schwarzkopf.  Earlier versions of this quote have also been found in various cultures around the world, but the message is the same: when you help someone reach a goal or overcome a challenge, you benefit as well.

I started Impactfull Life with the simple goal of helping as many of you as possible get from where you are to where you want to be.

My wife asked me a question early on in the process of developing our business, before we even started producing content.  She asked me, “If this business doesn’t make any money, are you gonna be ok with that?”  I had to think about that for a second.  I realized after thinking about it that the answer was yes.

If we have fun doing something together that we are passionate about, and we can help other people in their journey, I can live with not getting rich off of it.  That being said, nobody starts a business to fail.  I firmly believe that if we can help you, and lots of others like you, the business will be a success and the money will take care of itself.

So ask yourself: are you trying to make an impact and lead a full life all by yourself, OR are you impacting others by bringing some value to their lives as well?  You know, there’s an old saying that “it’s lonely at the top.”  Well, not if you bring a bunch of people with you.  If you’re trying to do it alone, who are you going to enjoy the view with?

Take this week and figure out how you can contribute something to the world, no matter how small, that benefits others.  Help them up the mountain so you can enjoy the view together.  Who do you know that’s struggling? How can you help them up the mountain?

You don’t always have to solve the problem to make a positive impact. Sometimes, just reaching out and letting someone know you were thinking about them is all they need to hear. Tell them you believe in their ability to figure things out and that you’re here if they need to talk. Just a few kind words can be the boost to get them moving in the right direction.

2 bonus quotes:

“You can get anything you want out of life if you just help enough people get what they want out of life.” – Zig Ziglar

Successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others. Unsuccessful people are always asking, ‘What’s in it for me?’ – Brian Tracy

I love these quotes because they shift the focus from what I want out of life to what I can contribute to the world.  What service can you provide to others? Who can you help?  What problem can you help solve?

If you help someone else, you WILL make an impact, and you WILL lead a Full Life.

Thanks for reading and have a great week!
